Odisha can take pride with the fact that the heritage Chilika Lake has received 7,61,940 birds in 2014 – much higher than the number in 2015. In 2013, 7.19 lakh migratory birds had visited the Chilika Lake. DFO, Chilika Wildlife Division, Bikash Ranjan Das disclosed the figure yesterday.
The annual bird census was carried out in Chilika Lake on Friday by the wildlife wing of the Forest Department and experts from different organisations and trained volunteers. As many as 75 experts from various organisations took part in the survey.
Around 20 groups were involved in the counting process of migratory birds at an area spreading over 1,100 sq. km.
