Cyclone Titli: Educational Institutions in 5 Districts to be closed from Tomorrow

ONI Bureau: As ‘Cyclone Titli’ turning into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ within the next 20 hours, the Odisha Government has ordered closure of all schools, colleges, educational institutions and anganwadi centres in 5 districts – Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara from tomorrow till October 12.

Earlier, the educational institutions in 4 districts were ordered to be closed. However, Kendrapara was added to the list later in the night.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi. A decision on closure of schools and other educational institutions in other parts of the State would be taken after monitoring the situation tomorrow, he informed.

While NDRF teams have been dispatched to Ganjam, Puri, Kendrapara, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Bhadrak and Jajpur, 14 districts have been put on high alert. The Health Department has appointed nodal officers for each district – Kalahandi, Boudh, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khurda, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur & Kendrapara.

Holidays of fire services personnel, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) and Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) were cancelled; 20 teams reserved to be mobilised in north Odisha if needed, said Chief Fire Officer Sukant Sethi. Around 300 motor boats have also been put on standby to tackle any flood situation.

The Cyclone Titli is now stationed at 490 km away from Gopalpur, Ganjam. It would make landfall in the morning of October 11. While rains will start from tonight in South Odisha, all parts of the State would witness rains on October 10 and 11. Wind speed of 100-125 kmph is expected in some parts when the Cyclone makes landfall.
