Drainage System in Puri in Shambles ahead of July 18 Rath Yatra

Even as the ‘Brahma Fiasco’ is behind and everyone is giving their best shot to ensure a smooth Nabakalebara Rath Yatra on July 18, the two-hour heavy rain in Puri yesterday, has exposed the preparedness as well as the drainage and sanitation system.

Most areas in Puri remained waterlogged due to construction activities, poor drainage system and unclean drains. The administration boasted about making things perfect by July 10, which did not happen.

There have been allegations of poor management in Nabakalebara preparations by the opposition, rights groups and civil society members. But, the government and administration always tried to put up a volt face, saying everything is in place. They stand exposed today.

It would be a disaster if they fail to maintain things properly during the Rath Yatra, which may witness a congregation of over 20 lakh people this year.
