Farmers’ Suicide in Odisha: Two more distress Farmers end lives

Drought-OdishaBhubaneswar, Nov 20: Two distress farmers reportedly committed suicide in two different incidents on Friday. Two deaths were reported from Dhenkanal and Sundergarh districts.

Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared many measures to tackle drought situation and to safeguard interest of distressed farmers at ‘BJD’s Chasi Samavesh’ on Thursdary.

They were identified as Diganta Das of Raitala village under Gondia block in Dhenkanal and Satana Ekka, from Koparanda village under Bisra block in Sundergarh district.

As per reports, Diganta Das had consumed poison on Thursday and breathed his last on Friday morning while undergoing treatment at district hospital. According to his family members, he had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from usurers for paddy cultivation on five acres of land. He took extreme step due to crop loss and debt burden.

In another incident, body of Satana Ekka was found hanging on a tree in Koparanda village. He was also taken loan for agriculture purpose. His suffer huge loss in crop loss. He was unable to repay the loan for which he took such extreme step, claimed his family members. This is the first case of farmer suicide in Sundergarh district.
