Freedom Fighter Nirmala Mohanty dies at 84

Nirmala-MohantyRenowned Sarbodaya activist, Bhoodan movement leader and freedom fighter, Nirmala Mohanty passed away yesterday at her Bhubaneswar residence. She was 84. Her eldest daughter Aparna Mohanty lit the funeral pyre at Swargadwar, Puri.

Nirmala Mohanty, who worked with Pt. Gopabandhu Das and Rama Devi, was the mother of leading social activist of Odisha, Rutuparna Mohanty, who runs the famous ‘Maa Ghara’. Nirmala Mohanty was the main inspiration and guiding force behind the concept of ‘Maa Ghara’, which has received accolade not only in Odisha, but also many parts of India and world.

Her daughters Aparna Mohanty and Rutuparna Mohanty, sons-in-law Bichitrananda Mohanty and Dhiren Mohanty and other relatives such as Guru Prasad, Rabi Narayan Mohanty, Prafulla Mohanty and Gyanadeep were present on her side when she breathed her last.
