Heavy Rains lash South Odisha, 20,000 affected in Malkangiri

Odisha-Rains-TelaHeavy rains in the last 48 hours, have caused widespread destruction in South Odisha and brought the normal life into a complete halt. Malkangiri district has been worst affected. Over 20,000 people have been affected, while 500 houses were damaged in the district.

Situation is grim in many areas including Poteru, Telarai, MV-79, MV-96, MV-72 and Badili. The Lunch service in Chitrakonda Water Reservoir has been stopped till further notice. The district administration has deployed the rescue and relief teams. Two ODRAF teams are engaged in this work. Free cooked food are being provided to the affected people.

Malkangiri recorded 317 mm rain in the last 48 hours, while Jharigam block in Nabarangpur district, recorded 330 mm rains in a single day. Many areas in Koraput, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada and Nabarangpur too witnessed heavy rains. In Nabarangpur district, Indravati, Bhaskel and Tela rivers are in spate. An under-construction bridge on Tela River in Chandahandi block, was damaged due to flood waters.

In Malakangiri, Poteru, Saberi, Sileru and Saptadhara are in spate. There is a flood threat in Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts. However, the rains may recede by tomorrow, which may bring relief to the common people.
