Mahanadi Tribunal: SC asks Centre to reply by 3rd Week of Jan

ONI Bureau: The Supreme Court deferred the hearing on the issue of Mahanadi tribunal to resolve water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, asking Centre to file a report on this matter by the third week of January.

Odisha Government has filed a petition, seeking formation of a tribunal to resolve Mahanadi water dispute. However, Centre was reluctant to go for it. The issue has snowballed into a major controversy and triggered massive outrage in Odisha.

Next date of hearing in this case, has been fixed to 3rd week of January 2018. If centre fails to file a reply, the apext court will take a decision on the basis of merit of the case. The Supreme Court reported expressed resentment over the Centre’s approach on this issue.

Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Government has disapproved the idea of forming a tribunal and sought a Joint Control Board to resolve the dispute.
