NHRC takes Note of Death of 3 Pregnant Women in Burla

VSS-BurlaThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has slapped a notice on health department of Odisha over death of three pregnant women in VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla last month. Acting on the complaint of rights activist Akhand, the Commission has directed to the secretary of health and family welfare to submit a report in the matter within two weeks.

Three pregnant women had died at the VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla hours after they went through Caesarean section April 10. The doctors sought to pass the buck, saying the medicines provided by the government had side effects.

The deceased were Sulochana Pradhan (28) of Chhualiberna village of Belpahar in Jharsuguda district, Kalpana Mahakud (27) of Banjibahal village and Kasturi Seth (25) of Siakhandata, both in Bargarh district. It was alleged that they died due to medical negligence of the hospital and doctors.

There have been a series of allegations against the medical apathy at VSS Medical College and Hospital in Burla. Many Doctors, who have been transferred to Burla from SCB, Cuttack, are reportedly avoiding duties and indulged in dirty tricks to spend more time in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack by using proxy, thus affecting the healthcare services.

Many departments, including Medicines, Gynaecology, Surgery and Forensic have been under the scanner, but senior professors are hand-in-glove with politicians and other officials to protect the erring doctors, alleged Akhand.

The petitioner has prayed for proper action against the erring doctors and other officials involved in it.
