It’s official! The Odisha Government has announced power cuts across the state, owing to less water in the reservoirs. Although unofficial power cuts have become regular phenomenon in the last few days, this is the first time government has taken an official decision.
There will be one-hour power cut in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri everyday. Other urban areas of the state will witness a power cut of two hours per day. In rural areas, power cuts will last longer and there may not be any accountability.
According to Energy Secretary Suresh Mohapatra, Odisha currently needs 3,500 MW of electricity per day, which increases up to 4,000 MW during peak hours, but falls short of the target by 500 MW. Odisha is currently receiving 1000 MW less power from some major hydro power generation units due to various reasons.
