Odisha Govt brings Ordinance to amend Official Language Act

Bhasa Andolan @ Madhu Babu Jayanti 1The Odisha Government has finally brought an Ordinance to amend the Odisha Official Language Act, 1954 – known as ‘The Odisha Official Language (Amendment) Ordinance, 2016’. It’s a victory of people of Odisha and all those, who worked relentlessly without any self-interest for upliftment of Odia Language.

The Ordinance will pave the way for the implementation of ‘Governance of Odisha in Odia Language’, which CM Naveen Patnaik had promised earlier, owing to the demands of Activists of Odia Language.

As a member of Ministerial Committee, Shri Subhas Chandra Pattanyak had submitted a draft proposal in this regard in September 2015, which is listed on the government website.

It’s major win for the founder-members of Bhasha Andolan, specifically, Subhas Chandra Pattanayak, Pradyumna Satpathy, Pabitra Maharatha, Sagar Satapathy, Tusarkanta Satapathy, Gajanan Mishra, Madhumita Samal, Subrat Chhatoi and all those who supported them. They had defied all odds to continue with their fight. However, the battle is still not over, as we need to wait and watch to see whether the government finally dilutes the draft proposal or implement the same in letter and spirit.
