Odisha Govt confirms 57 deaths in Cyclone Titli; claims Rs 2,200 Cr loss

ONI Bureau:  The Odisha government on Tuesday confirmed that 57 persons have died in the State in Cyclone Titli related incidents.

Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi today confirmed the death of 39 persons from Gajapati district followed by 12 from Ganjam while 1 each in Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Angul, Rayagada and Cuttack districts.

There has been a loss of Rs 2,200 cr in the State including damage to roads 500cr, crope loss 233cr, damage of power infrastructure was 133cr and damage to houses was 150 crore.

The State Government is trying to compensate the losses from State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF); if we face a shortage of funds, will report to the Centre, said Chief Secy AP Padhi.

However, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned Rs 102 crore as the first installment of Gratuitous Relief fund for the cyclone Titli affected Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada districts. The State Govt will continue to provide Relief till the situation is normalized.

It can be recalled that although the Odisha was reluctant to reveal the exact number of casualties, first confirmed 15-18 deaths and then 26 by yesterday.

However, BJP leader Bhrugu Baxiparra continued to pursue the matter, visited the areas along with his team and released the list of deceased and missing people, putting Govt on back foot.
