Odisha to transport back migrant workers stranded in Gujarat

CM Naveen Patnaik spoke with Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani through video-conferencing this morning. In the meeting, they discussed issues pertaining to migrant labourers from Odisha stranded in different parts of Gujarat due to the sudden lockdown.

Patnaik addressed the safe return of Odia migrants stuck in the western state amid nationwide lockdown. The ultimate judgment was taken after Naveen Patnaik, Vijay Rupani and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan talked about the transportation thoroughly.

An official statement from the Odisha Chief Minister’s Office was released stating, “Two senior officials from each state would be part of a committee to chalk out the details of the transport, likely by buses. Other mediums of transport will also be part of this discussion.”

Notably, the state government has made compulsory registration of all migrants willing to return to Odisha. The government has developed a portal for the purpose. Post their return, they will have to stay under government quarantine for 14 days.

It is estimated that five lakh Odia migrant workers are stranded across the country due to the lockdown.
