Odisha Truck Owners Federation calls off strike

Bhubaneswar, Oct 6:  The five-day old strike by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has been called off on Monday after successful talks with the central government in New Delhi. Following this development, Odisha Truck Owners Federation, which extended its support to the AIMTC for nation-wide strike, has also called off the strike.

Trucks owner have resumed their services across the country including Odisha. In the state, more than two lakh truck owners had been on strike for last five days.

In India around 87 lakh truck owners under the aegis of AIMTC went on strike demanding the central government to scrap the toll system in the country. On the other hand, the central government had been insisting on the e-toll system by December.

The truckers’ body has expressed satisfaction over the assurance given by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The talks between the minister, officials and truckers body representative last of three hours on Monday evening.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has assured that the government would look into their demands. AIMTC President Bhim Wadhwa said transporters have decided to end their stir.

The central government has also formed a committee headed by Transport Secretary Vijay Chhibber in which truckers will have representatives to look into their demand and the committee will submit report by December 15.
