Pradeep Maharathy speaks on Farmer Suicide Deaths in House

Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy addressed on farmer suicide deaths in the Odisha Assembly today as the issue continued to rock the State Assembly for fourth consecutive day on Thursday.

Speaking on farmer suicide, Pradeep Maharathy said that in Odisha five farmers committed suicide in Boudh, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Bargarh and Balasore in 2017.

While reports from Boudh are awaited, reports of farmer suicides in 4 districts including Bargarh, Balasore, Nabarangpur and Ganjam have been confirmed. The farmers of these 4 districts did not commit suicide due to crop loss, Maharathy said in the Assembly.

Bargarh farmer Hadu Bagarti ‘s suicide was attributed to quarrel with his wife, not due to crop loss or debt burden, Maharathy added.
