Savitri Brata the tale Odia women tradition

Savitri Vrata is a fasting day observed by married Hindu Odia women of Odisha.

Married Hindu women whose husbands are alive observe it as a vow with great dedication and pray for their husband to have a long life. Traditionally, the day is observed to remember the sacrifice of Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from being taken by the god of death.

Women are seen offering prayers to gods and goddesses, carrying puja ‘thalis’ with ritualistic ‘sindoor’, ‘alta’, bangles, sacred thread (Brata) fruits and flowers.
