Twitterati react to “Chopper Attack” on Baijayant Panda by Odisha Govt

ONI Bureau (By Ojaswini Mishra): The seizure of Baijayant Panda’s helicopter by Puri Police on charges of flying over the Chilika Lake, has badly backfired for the Odisha Government and CM Naveen Patnaik. There has been a massive outrage on Twitter and mostly people slammed the Govt accusing it of vindictive politics.

While a few BJD sympathizers and trolls were still active with negative remarks against Baijayant Panda, it did not work for Biju Janata Dal (BJD). A few things went against them, forcing them to stay on back foot.

1. The FIR copy filed by Chilika Development Authority (CDA) said the chopper was flying over Chilika Lake at 1:30 PM on September 15. But, the Airport Director confirmed that the helicopter already landed in Bhubaneswar at 1:26 PM and it had all prior permission.

2. Questions were raised why CM Naveen Patnaik was allowed to fly over Chilika during the inauguration of Swosti Chilika Resort in July 2017. That forced Puri SP and CDA Chief Executive to clarify that they would look into the matter.

3. Odisha Forest & Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray said, Chilika’s ecology has not been affected, it had only created panic among fishermen in the region. He later retracted saying the helicopter was flying at a low height violating the regulations.

4. CDA Chief Executive Susanta Nanda said, “CDA has no restrictions for flying over Chilika.

5. While BJD people tried to trigger an outrage against Abhijit Iyer-Mitra saying he insulted Konark Temple and Odia culture, later it was found that Abhijit promoted Odisha Tourism and Odia culture, food etc. heavily in the last few days and even rated Odisha ahead of Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. His comments on Konark was full of sarcasm.

With all this contradictions and lack of clarity, the government showed its immaturity in dealing with the matter. It was clear the Puri Police acted in a haste, which was totally unwarranted. They should have launched a thorough investigation first before going all out against Jay Panda and nail him if he was guilty as per the law.

FIR copy says – flying over " no flying eco sensitive zone ".

First Chilika is not in "no flying zone " list by Civil aviation ministry.

Second if @PandaJay is guilty of flying over eco sensitive zone @Naveen_Odisha also flew over chilika few months ago. Why double standard?
