Rio Paralympics 2016: India wins Gold and Bronze in High Jump

paralympics-mariyappan-thangavelu-varun-bhatiMariyappan Thangavelu won the gold medal and Varun Singh Bhati clinched bronze in the men’s High Jump T-42 event at the Rio Paralympics on Friday.

Thangavelu won the Gold medal with his best jump of 1.89 metres, while Bhati clinched the bronze medal with his best of 1.86 metres.

Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian high-jumper to win a gold at the Paralympics.

Under the Sports Ministry’s Cash Award Scheme, Mariyappan will get Rs 75 lakh and Bhati will be presented Rs 30 lakh cash prize.

Meantime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced Rs 2 crore award for gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu.
