Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday requested Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to set up an airport in Odisha’s industrial town Paradip.

In a letter, Pradhan sought the personal attention of Prabhu to examine the techno-economic feasibility for setting an airport at Paradip as soon as possible.

“The grand vision of development of Paradip would remain incomplete without an airport providing air connectivity, as the nearest Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar is 135 kms away and takes more than three hours by road,” he said , adding that the Paradip Port Trust has already requested the Airport Authority of India to set up an airport there.

Paradip is one of the major ports in eastern India and last year became one of the three ports in India to have handled a total cargo of over 100 million tons.

The port is being further expanded and modernized and it is expected that by 2020 it would be able to handle 332 million tons of cargo per annum thereby making it the largest port in India, said Pradhan.

He said the Union government has declared Paradip Port as a Smart Port Industrial City, which is fast emerging as a major industrial hub in Odisha and Eastern India.

Besides having the port, Paradip already has an oil refinery of 15 MMTPA capacity, a 12 MMTPA pellet plant, two fertilizer plants together of 4 MMTPA capacity and a edible oil refinery, he said.

In addition, Pradhan said that his Ministry is implementing several big ticket industrial projects, including expansion of refinery to 21 MMTPA from 15 MMTPA, a 700 TMT Poly Propylene plant by 2018 and a 355 TMT Mono Ethyl Glycol unit by 2023-24 which will feed various downstream industries including plastics, paints, rubber and synthetic yarn industries, and all these initiatives “require seamless connectivity”. (IANS)

ONI Bureau: While inaugurating several passenger amenities at the Bhubaneswar Railway Station, including a second entry point and ticket facilities at Platform No. 6, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan revealed that Bhubaneswar will have a second Airport soon.

“As part of PM Narendra Modi’s development agenda for Eastern part of India, several measures have been taken for developing railways, national highways and air services. Several review meetings held in recent months for the above projects in Odisha,” he said.

“There will be two more ring roads for Bhubaneswar on the National Highways. A second Airport will come up in the smart city. In addition, the PNG/CNG facilities by the Petroleum Ministry, will make things easier for people of Bhubaneswar”, the Minister said.

“Modi Government has provided enough funds for railway projects in Odisha in just 3.5 years, which the state did not get even in the last 30 years. I urge both Railways as well as the State Government to utilise the funds properly,” Dharmendra said.

In the wake of increasing number of passengers at the Bhubaneswar Railway Station, the Railways have decided to build a six-feet wide foot over-bridge by connecting Platform No. 1 to Platform No. 6. It will be completed in 2018.

cold chinaBeijing, Jan 22: Highways were closed and airport traffic was disrupted as the worst cold in years hit many Chinese provinces. Highways in at least 12 provincial regions of China were closed since 8.00 a.m. (local time) on Friday due to blizzards and snowstorms, Xinhua reported.

A large part of Jiangxi province was hit by snowstorms on Friday. The airport in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi province, was closed on Friday morning. Several sections of highway in the province were also closed. Jiangxi’s coldest weather since 1992 is expected from January 23 to 26, according to weather office.

More than 44 flights have been cancelled in Zhejiang province, the provincial transportation department announced on Friday. Temperatures in Beijing dropped to ten degrees Celsius below the freezing point on Friday and are expected to hit a 30-year low of minus 17 degrees Celsius from Saturday through Sunday, the Beijing meteorological station forecast.

The temperature in Genhe city, located in China’s Mongolia region, dropped to a whopping 47.8 degrees Celsius below zero on Thursday, nearing its historical record of minus 49.6 degrees. Genhe has been called the coldest place in China.

Icy fog clouded the street of Genhe, where fish vendors could snap a frozen fish into two pieces. Ergune in Inner Mongolia and surrounding areas have seen temperatures fall to 40 degrees Celsius below the freezing point.

Wang Ji, deputy director of the Beijing Weather Centre, said that since January, the El Nino effect has subsided, but a bout of cold from the northern Atlantic and the Ural mountains in Russia has headed south, causing snowstorms in Europe and moving eastward to affect China.

“We should not confuse weather changes with broader climate change. Though El Nino has spawned a warm winter since last year, we can still expect cold waves like this one,” said Wang. (IANS)
