Khadga Prasad Sharma OliKathmandu, Jan 25: Nepal’s imports from China, its second largest trade partner, fell 14.1 percent in the first five months of the current fiscal 2015-16, Nepal’s central bank said on Monday. Imports have been affected by a blockade on the Indian border points and a delay in bringing the closed Khasa-Tatopani border point into operation, Xinhua news agency reported.

Imports from China declined to $342 million in the first five months of the current fiscal, which begins in mid-July, from $398 million during the same period in the previous fiscal, according to the bank. Normally, Nepal imports 25 percent of goods from China through the land route and the rest enter Nepal by sea via Kolkata, according to the Customs Department.

Imports of Chinese goods through sea have been affected due to the ongoing troubles near the Indian border, according to the bank.

“The supply of goods through the land route has also been affected due to the delay in bringing the Khasa-Tatopani customs point, which had served as the main trade route till the deadly earthquake last year, back to operation,” said Nara Bahadur Thapa, chief of research department at the bank.

Currently, the inland trade between Nepal and China is taking place through the Kerung-Rasuwagadhi trade route, which was also closed for six months after the earthquake but was reopened in October 2015. (IANS)

Nepal fuelKathmandu, Nov 16: Nepal’s Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli has called on India to lift “unofficial blockade” in Nepal as soon as possible. In his televised address on Sunday to the nation, the premier, who assumed office as the head of the government on October 11, explicitly mentioned that Nepali people have been undergoing through a hardest time due to blockade imposed by India.

“It is unthinkable that a sovereign nation faces such an inhumane and severe pain, misery and blockade in the 21st century for having a Constitution with progressive, pro-people and democratic contents through an elected Constituent Assembly with people’s overwhelming participation and democratic franchise,” Prime Minister Oli said, Xinhua reported.

The Nepali prime minister’s remark has come at a time when Nepali people have been reeling under acute shortage of fuel and basic commodities due to an Indian embargo after Nepal adopted democratic constitution on September 20.

This was the first time Nepali prime minister categorically pointed out Indian economic blockade in the Himalayan nation though the Indian has been denying any embargo against Nepal.

The Indian government has cited security reasons behind obstruction of fuel and basic commodities supply to Nepal due to ongoing agitation against new constitution by Nepal’s Madhesi parties at the India-Nepal border.

“Nepal is passing through a serious humanitarian crisis which should not happen even during the wars. The blockade imposed by our southern neighbour has underestimated the feeling of the Nepali and Indian people. Imposing a blockade to a landlocked nation is a breach of international treaties, norms and values,” the prime minister said.

He said that Nepal wants to have relations with its neighbours on the basis of the principles of Panchsheel.

Stating that the government was making all efforts to address genuine concerns of agitating Madhesi parties, Prime Minister Oli said remarked that the government is ready to review the demarcation of federal sate borders which has been a key demand of the agitating parties.

“The newly promulgated constitution is not discriminatory to any sections of people including the Madhesi. It has addressed the aspirations of all people. As the constitution is a dynamic document, it can be amended several times. I would like urge Madhesi parties to end the ongoing agitation,” the prime minister added.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s talks between the agitating Madhesi parties and the government has failed to reach any conclusion, officials told Xinhua. (IANS)

Khadga Prasad Sharma OliKathmandu, Oct 12: Barely three weeks after a democratic federal constitution was promulgated in Nepal, Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli was on Monday sworn-in as the new prime minister heading an eight-member cabinet. President Ram Baran Yadav administered the oaths of office and secrecy to Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) chairman Oli and his cabinet colleagues at a brief function here in Sheetal Niwas, the presidential palace, Xinhua news agency reported.

Oli, who was elected prime minister by the country’s parliament on Sunday, chose two deputies in Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and Kamal Thapa. The two have been rewarded for the support they extended to Oli during Sunday’s vote against immediate past premier Sushil Koirala, of the Nepali Congress.

While Thapa heads Nepal’s only royalist party, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, Gachhadar is chairman of the Madhesi Rights Forum, Democratic — which chose to break away from the ongoing anti-constitution agitation by the Madhesi community and ethnic people of Nepal’s southern Terai plains. The five administered oath as ministers were Agni Kharel, Satya Narayan Mandal, Som Pandey, Haribol Gajurel and Ram Kumar Subba. Their portfolios were yet to be announced.

Oli-NepalKathmandu, Oct 11: Communist leader Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli was on Sunday elected prime minister of Nepal — the first premier of the Himalayan nation after the September 20 promulgation of a federal constitution.

With support from the main opposition Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist, the CPN (Unified Marxist-Leninist) chairman defeated outgoing prime minister and Nepali Congress leader Sushil Koirala in a keenly contested vote in parliament.

The 63-year-old Oli secured support of 338 lawmakers of 587 voting in the 599-seat house.

Oli, a chronic patient of kidney-related ailments, is known to be a hawkish politician, whose sharp-worded statements have made headlines in the media.

An earlier sharp critic of the Maoists, Oli joined hands with UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to become the 38th prime minister of Nepal.

The key challenge for Oli now is addressing the demands of agitating Madhesh-based political parties and other groups over concerns related to the newly-promulgated constitution.

He also needs to carry out on war footing reconstruction and rehabilitation necessitated by the April 25 earthquake, restoring peace and tranquillity in the Nepal-India border area and working towards political stability.

Oli started his political career some 45 years back from Jhapa district in eastern Nepal. He represents Jhapa-7 constituency in parliament. He served many years in jail during the partyless Panchayat era in Nepal before 1990 when the king was head of state. He has served as home and foreign minister in the past.

Oli is married but has no children. He has no formal education from a college or a university but speaks several languages. The 63-year-old leader was elected chief of the CPN-UML in July 2014, defeating Madhav Kumar Nepal, another former prime minister. He was chief of the UML’s international department before being elected to the top post in the party.

Oli had served as the deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs in the Girija Prasad Koirala-led interim government formed immediately after the 2006 People’s Movement.

In 1994, he was minister for home affairs in the cabinet led by then UML chairman Man Mohan Adhikari. He was elected a member of parliament thrice — in 1991, 1994 and 1999 — from various constituencies in Jhapa district. (IANS)
