Australian girl makes third attempt at Mount Everest

Alyssa AzarSydney, Feb 25: A teenager is making her third attempt at scaling the world’s tallest mountain peak in an effort to become the youngest Australian to summit Mount Everest.

Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar will depart for Nepal next month and begin her two-month climb in April, her third attempt after her bid in 2014 was cancelled due to an avalanche while in 2015 the Nepal earthquake also derailed her ambition, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

Azar has already trekked the Andes, scaled Mount Kilimanjaro at age 14 and is the youngest Australian to climb Ama Dablam in the Himalayas.

“Who knows what’s really going to happen on Everest but I think it’s not something I’d want to quit on anyway,” Azar said, adding people have been dismissive of her attempt due to her age.

“For me this is just something I’m 100 percent committed to.”

Jordan Romero in May 2010 became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. He was 13 years old when he reached the summit.

However, Malavath Purna from India became the youngest female to climb the Everest in May 2014, at the age of 13 years and 11 months. (IANS)
