7/11 Mumbai Blasts: 5 Sentenced to Death, 7 get Life Term

Special MCOCA Court in Mumbai, has sentenced 5 people to death in connection with the 7/11 Mumbai blasts case. 7 others have been given life term. The convicts have decided to move the Bombay High Court against the verdict.

Out of the 12 convicts, Faisal Sheikh, Asif Khan, Kamal Ansari, Ehtesham Sidduqui and Naveed Khan were sentenced to death. The serial blasts, which had occurred on July 11, 2006, left 188 people dead and over 700 injured.

The blasts were triggered at the first class compartments of local trains between 6.24 and 6.35 PM, when lakhs of office-goers use Mumbai’s local trains to return home. All accused were part of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) group.

While 22 accused were arrested in connection with the blasts, 15 are still absconding. Key conspirators Faisal Shaikh and Asif Khan were among the convicts. Abdul Wahid Shaikh was acquitted.
