Coal Scam: CBI registers case against Hindalco

A few days after former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumarmangalam Birla were questioned in connection with the coal scam, the CBI has registered a case against M/S Indal (acquired by Hindalco) and some unknown officials for the irregularities in the coal block allocations.

At least four places, including one in Mumbai and three in Sambalpur, were raided by the CBI sleuths.

The case was filed against Hindalco for allegedly using coal in unauthorised manner in the existing power plant although allocation was made for expanding the capacity of existing power plants. The CBI also alleged that mining operations were conducted without permission.

The search operations were conducted related to Talabira I coal block. Dr. Manmohan Singh was questioned in connection with the allocation of Talabira II and III blocks in Sundargarh district, which were assigned to Hindalco.
