Modi Government withdraws 6 Amendments, sticks to 2013 Land Bill

Under fire from the Opposition and rights activists across the country, the Narendra Modi government has decided to withdraw all six controversial amendments, including dealing with consent clause, restricting land for industrial corridors, putting in place a hassle-free mechanism for grievance redressal and removing the exemption to social infrastructure projects in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

The original Act required the consent of at least 70 per cent of farmers in the area where land is to be acquired for such projects. It will now be up to individual states to pass their own laws to undertake business-friendly land reforms. so, the 2013 Land Bill formulated by the UPA Government will stand valid once the amendments are withdrawn.

The Joint Committee of Parliament examining the Land Acquisition Bill will submit its report soon.
