The contribution of women scholars is highly regarded by the premier institution – that has been offering the Nobel Prize for long. As per information we have gathered from their website – as many as 48 women in total have been awarded the Nobel Prize between 1901 and 2015.

In the arena of peace, the following 16 women Nobel Laureates have contributed significantly to the world through their service and dedication. Noble Peace Prize is the highest regard that world could pay to these brave women for their courage and sacrifice. Here is the list of the heroines of peace – the 16 women awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize so far (1901-2014).

1905: Bertha von Suttner
Baroness Bertha von Suttner was born on 9 June 1843 in Countess Kinsky in Prague. She was the first woman to be awarded the Peace Prize, wrote one of the nineteenth century’s most influential books, the anti-war novel “Lay Down Your Arms” (1889).

1931: Jane Addams
Jane Addams was born on 6 September 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois, USA. Jane was the second woman to receive the Peace Prize. She founded the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919, and worked for many years to get the great powers to disarm and conclude peace agreements. Jane Addams was nominated 91 times between 1916 and 1931, when she was finally awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

1946: Emily Greene Balch
Emily Greene Balch was born on 8 January 1867 in Jamaica Plain, MA (now Boston), USA. Emily was given the Peace Prize in 1946 for her lifelong work for disarmament and peace.In 1935 Emily Greene Balch became leader of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Emily Green Balch received the Nobel Peace Prize the first year that she were nominated.

1976: Betty Williams
Betty Williams was born on 22 May 1943 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She was the founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People). She recied her Nobel Prize one year later in 1977 for the peace movement in Belfast.

1976: Mairead Corrigan
Mairead Corrigan was born on 27 January 1944, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Marriead was co-founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People). She also received Nobel Prize in 1977.

1979: Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa was born on 26 August 1910 in Uskup (now Skopje), Ottoman Empire (now Republic of Macedonia). She died on 5 September 1997 in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in India. For humanitarian work she was conferred with Nobel Peace Prize. She was leader of Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata.

1982: Alva Myrdal
Alva Myrdal was born 31 January 1902 in Uppsala, Sweden. As the government minister in charge of disarmament issues that Alva Myrdal really stood out as an innovator. She was conferred Nobel Peace prize for her role as writer, diplomat, former cabinet minister. She contributed a lot in the filed of arms control and disarmament.

1991: Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi was born on 19 June 1945 in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma (now Myanmar). The Burmese Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is the daughter of the legendary liberation movement leader Aung San. She fought for human rights in Myanmar for which she was conferred with Nobel Peace Prize.

1992: Rigoberta Menchú Tum
Rigoberta Menchú Tum was born on 9 January 1959 in Aldea Chimel, Guatemala. The Guatemalan Indian woman Rigoberta Menchú was awarded the Peace Prize for her work for the rights of indigenous peoples and reconciliation between ethnic groups.

1997: Jody Williams
Jody Williams was born on 9 October 1950 in Putney, VT, USA. She was conferred with Nobel Peace Prize for for her work for the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines.

2003: Shirin Ebadi
Shirin Ebadi was born on 21 June 1947 in Hamadan, Iran.She was Iran’s first female judge. Nobel Peace Prize was conferred for her efforts for democracy and human rights. She has focused especially on the struggle for the rights of women and children.

2004: Wangari Muta Maathai
Wangari Maathai was born on 1 April 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya.Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She was conferred the award for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.

2011: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was born on 29 October 1938 in Monrovia, Liberia. She was  President of Liberia. Nobel Peace Prize was conferred for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.

2011: Leymah Gbowee
Leymah Gbowee was born on 1 February 1972 in Monrovia, Liberia. She was conferred with Nobel Peace prize for for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.

2011: Tawakkol Karman
Tawakkol Karman was born on 7 February 1979 in Ta’izz, Yemen. She was awarded the prize for her non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.

2014: Malala Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai was born on 12 July 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. She suffered an attack on her life by Taliban gunmen in 2012, she has continued her struggle and become a leading advocate of girls’ rights.She was awarded for her courage and struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.
