Supreme Court turns down Gas Tariff Regulation plea

Supreme Court on Section 499 IPC DefamationCompanies supplying gas are now free to set their own tariffs with the Supreme Court on Wednesday turning down a plea by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to regulate the prices of inter-city supplies.

An apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra on Wednesday dismissed a PNGRB plea seeking control over the supply of gas by the different companies, including IGL, within cities.

The Board had contended that even if it is not fixing the gas prices, Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and other companies should provide it the documents relating to inter-city gas supply so that it could post on its website the price that consumers should pay.

IGL had refused to share these details with the Board. The Board had challenged a 2012 Delhi High Court order holding that it has no regulatory control over gas tariffs. (IANS)
