Bombay HC stays Meat Ban on September 17, Slaughter Ban Continues

Meat-BanThe Bombay High Court has stayed the meat ban scheduled for September 17, saying there is inconsistency between the versions given by the Maharashtra Government and BMC. The HC allowed the sale of meat, but allowed the slaughter ban to continue. That means, people can sell and purchase meat, but won’t be allowed to slaughter animals.

“Though the state government circular banning meat sale on two days was issued in 2004, it was never implemented fully,” the HC was quoted by PTI.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had agreed for a four-day ban on sale of meat in Mumbai during Paryushan Parva of Jains, but later reduced the ban by two days. As there was a ban on September 10, September 17 was fixed for second ban day.

The issue had snowballed into a major controversy with Shiv Sena and MNS opposing the move along with Congress and NCP. The MNS workers even cooked Tandoori chicken outside Jain Temples and set up non-veg shops outside Jain Societies.
