SC slams Gujarat for not implementing Food Security Act

Supreme Court GujaratThe Supreme Court has come down heavily on the Gujarat Government today for non-implementation of the National Food Security Act, asking whether it was not part of India or wanted to break away.

“When the Parliament has enacted the law, why the Gujarat Government has remained defiant. They need to tell us whether they believe in Parliament of India or law passed by it or not,” an apex court bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice N.V. Ramana said.

The Supreme Court expressed “shock and surprise” over the stand taken by Gujarat Government and said it would set a bad precedent for other states in the country, which have shown interest to implement the Food Security Act.

Although there are 9 states and 2 union territories, which have not implemented the National Food Security Act, the court pulled up Gujarat heavily without naming others.
