Bol Bom Devotees throng Temples on 2nd Holy Monday of Shravan

DSC_0054Thousands of Bol Bom devotees throng different Shiva temples across Odisha to pay obeisance to Lord Shiva on the second Monday of holy month Shravan.

The tradition of Bolbum is observed mostly in the Mondays of the Odia month of Shravan and the devotees mostly getting wet in rain carry the water pots to the temples of Lord Shiva according to their desire to pour over ‘Shivalinga’ in umpteen temples.

Over the years, this ritual has increased gained significance during the auspicious time of the month. The Bol bum devotees attired in Safforn T-shirts and shorts, familiar everywhere as ‘Kawariyas’, chanting “BOL BAM! BOL BAM! “, “Bol Bam, Har Har Bam” walk miles barefooted to bring pure water from the ponds.

The sight of such devotees walking on barefoot evokes reverence from the common people as the latter makes every arrangement for the convenience of ‘kawariyas’.

Especially the temples of Lord Lingaraj in Bhubaneswar, Lokanath in Puri, Dhabaleswar in Cuttack and Kapilash in Dhenkanal are the main attraction for devotees during the holy day.

The administration and the police have made necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the rituals maintaining law and order in order to avoid any untoward situation.
