Odisha celebrates Maha Navami; know its significance

ONI Bureau:  Maha Navami of Maa Durga was celebrated with religious fervour across Odisha on Thursday. Large number of crowd thronged puja pandals and temples where special rituals were performed.

Devotees enjoyed colorful decorations and designs of the pandals along with gold and silver crowns and jewelleries of the goddess.

Significance

Mahanavami is the last day of Navratri. On Navami, Goddess Durga is worshipped as Maa Saraswati – the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Young girls are worshipped as forms of Goddess Durga that called as Kanya Pujan.

On Maha Navami, Goddess Durga is also worshipped as Mahishasura Mardini. Though the Maha Nabami was celebrated at puja mandaps, Vijaya Dashami was observed at several peethas today.

The day falls on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashvin. Navami is considered an auspicious day to perform homa.
