Odisha Govt eyes 10 Lakh Tonnes Potato Production by 2017-18

Potato ProductionBhubaneswar, Sep 2: Under the Potato Mission 2015-16, Odisha government has set a target of 10 tonnes of potato production by 2017-18. And, in the current fiscal – 2015-16, the government is mulling production of 4 lakh tonnes of tuber production in Odisha.

This information was shared in the  meeting of state-level steering committee on Potato Mission was chaired by Chief Secretary Gokul Chandra Pati  at Secretariat here Tuesday. Reviewing the progress of the mission, Pati directed the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology to produce high-yielding varieties of regional tuber through the Krishi Vigyan Kendras.  The Chief Secretary emphasized on potato production clusters with cold storages across the state.

In an endeavour to boost the potato production in the state, Odisha Cabinet approved the proposal to bring changes in the existing Agriculture Policy 2013 to set up cold storages and the government formulated Potato Mission.
