Ireland stun West Indies in 2015 World Cup

Ireland-WCIreland, which had caused a major upset in 2011 World Cup by upsetting England, has triggered the first upset of 2015 World Cup, as they stunned West Indies in their opening game. Despite scoring 304, West Indies lost the match by 4 wickets.

They had stunned Pakistan in 2007, England in 2011 and now defeated West Indies in 2015. Ireland also became the first team in 2015 World Cup to successfully chase a target.

Earlier, West Indies posted 304/7 in 50 overs. Lendl Simmons scored 102 off 84 balls with 9 boundaries and 5 sixes. Darren Sammy scored 89 off 67 balls with 9 boundaries and 3 sixes. Chris Gayle (36) and Andre Russell (27*) were the other contributors. For Ireland, George Dockrell took three wickets.

The Irish batsmen negotiated the West Indies bowling very well and consolidated their innings with good partnerships. They finally reached 307/6 in 45.5 overs and won the match by 5 wickets. Paul Stirling (92), Ed Joyce (84) and Niall O’Brien (79*) played the anchor role in their victory. There was a little scare towards the end, but Ireland held their nerves to clinch the victory. For West Indies, Jerome Taylor took three wickets. Paul Stirling was declared ‘Man of the Match’.
