GST Bill, 2014 introduced in Rajya Sabha, House Adjourned

Rajya-Sabha-GSTThe Constitution (122nd Amendment) (GST) Bill, 2014, was introduced in Rajya Sabha by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley amid huge uproar by Congress MPs, who blocked it and forced the adjournment of the House. The Goods and Service Tax Bill will increase competitiveness and may add 1-2% to the GDP. Once implemented, the consumers will have a uniform tax regime and pay just one tax.

The House was adjourned till tomorrow, as the Congress MPs did not allow it to function. Arun Jaitley has accused the Congress of trying to stall the economic progress of the country. Meanwhile, the government has garnered the support of Samajwadi Party (15), Trinamool Congress (12), JD-U (12), AIADMK (11) and BJD (8). Apart from many other smaller parties and Independent MPs have rallied behind the government.

The Rajya Sabha will decide the fate of GST Bill tomorrow. The government will need two-third majority in Rajya Sabha to pass the bill.
