Naqvi sentenced for breaching Prohibitory Orders in 2009

NaqviSenior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Minority and Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has been convicted and sentenced to one year in jail for breaching prohibitory orders or Section 144 during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi along with his 19 co-accused were arrested soon after the verdict was pronounced by the Rampur Sessions Court. However, he is expected to get bail shortly, as the formalities are being completed.

An FIR was registered against Naqvi and his supporters in 2009 during the Lok Sabha polls at Patwai police station of Rampur district. They were convicted of breaching the prohibitory orders and barging into the police station while holding a demonstration.

They were charged under various sections of the IPC and Criminal Law Amendment Act. There will be no disqualification of Naqvi as the Rajya Sabha MP, as he received one-year jail term and got the bail immediately.
