Parliament Updates: Furore In Rajya Sabha Over Farm Bills; BJD Opposes

After huge furore, the controversial farm bills were passed in Rajya Sabha on Sunday, days after Lok Sabha cleared it.

In Rajya Sabha, the introduction of the farm bill was met with heavy opposition, with the members demanding a select committee for consideration before it was out to vote.

The two bills – Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 – were introduced by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar.

On Thursday, Cabinet Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal had resigned from her post due to the controversial bill.

BJD, also opposed the move and suggested the bill be moved to a Select Committee.

The bill was passed after ‘voice vote’ and will now be sent to President Ram Nath Kovind for his assent. The live proceedings of the Rajya Sabha session was also abruptly cut off, which led the opposition term it as murder of democracy.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties moved a no-confidence motion against newly appointed Rajya Sabha Vice-Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.
