Government releases Religion Data of 2011 Census, Hindus at 79.8%

The Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India (RGI) releases Census 2011 data on Population by Religious Communities. According to the report, Hindus lead at 79.8% (96 Cr) of the total population, while Muslims are placed second with 14.2% (17 Cr). Christians form 2.3% (2.78 Cr) of the total Indian population, followed by Sikhs (1.7% or 2 Cr), Buddhists (0.7% or 84 Lakh) and Jains (0.4% or 45 Lakh).
