Gallup International puts PM Modi at No. 3 among World Leaders

ONI Bureau: Prime Minister Narendra Modi added another feather to his cap, as he found himself at No. 3 spot in the annual survey released by Switzerland-based Gallup International. This is the best-ever rank for any Indian PM.

The survey titled ‘Opinion of Global Leaders’ had interviewed 53,769 persons across dozens of countries. The respondents answer as to whether they have a favourable opinion of a particular leader or an unfavourable opinion.

While Modi got 30% ‘favourable’ rating, he also got 22% ‘unfavourable’ rating, making it a net score of +8 – behind Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (+21) and Emmanuel Macron, President, France (+20). Modi was placed 5th in this survey two years ago.

US President Donald Trump received 31% ‘positive’ votes, but he also attracted 58% negative votes, which put him at 11th spot with a net score of -27. Pope Francis remained at the top of this list with a score of +38, but he is a religious leader, not political.

Interestingly, Narendra Modi received more appreciation from Vietnam, Fiji and Afghanistan, while he remains a hatred figure in Pakistan, South Korea and Palestinian Terr. Modi’s popularity declined in G8 countries though as compared to 2015. Russia gave him a big thumbs down in ‘favourable’ score. While Modi’s popularity increased in Afghanistan, it registers a sharp decline in Bangladesh.

Interestingly, US President Donald Trump remains the most popular foreign leader in India followed by Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel. Modi’s favourablity among Indians is highly positive with an overall score of 71. It was 61 in 2015.
