Speaker accepts Baijayant Panda’s resignation from Lok Sabha

ONI Bureau: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan accepted resignation of Baijayant Panda as a Parliamentarian, who had formally sent a letter to the Speaker’s office earlier as she was abroad that time.

After a formal conversation a few days ago, Speaker asked Baijayant Panda to reconsider his decision folliwing which BJD wrote a letter to the Speaker’s officer requesting her to accept his resignation. Mr. Panda finallly met Sumitra Mahajan on July 17 and confirmed that there won’t be any second thought and that he had made up his mind to quit from Lok Sabha as he had resigned from the party because of differences.

The Speaker informed the House today that Baijayant Panda’s resignation was accepted on July 18.

Earlier on Jan 24, 2018, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik suspended Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda from primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) for alleged anti-party activities.

However, Panda said he was “shocked” and denied the charges against him as “false and baseless.” He also alleged there was a conspiracy against him.

On Jun 12, 2018, when neither CM Naveen Patnaik nor any BJD leaders turned up to pay their last respects to his father late Bansidhar Panda, Baijayant Panda took the decision to break all ties with the party and resigned from Lok Sabha.

Baijayant Panda, who had been a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms, had won from Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and 2014 on a BJD ticket.
