NGT bans Diesel Vehicles over 10 years old in Delhi

Vehicles in DelhiIn a land mark ruling, the National Green Tribunal, NGT, on Tuesday banned all diesel vehicles over ten years old from plying on roads of the national capital, Delhi.

“We direct all diesel vehicles, heavy or light, which are ten years old will not be permitted on the roads of Delhi and NCR,” the tribunal directed.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar passed the order and it noted that countries like Denmark, Brazil, China and Sri Lanka are in the process of banning diesel vehicles.

The tribunal also gave 20 hours to the Delhi Govt. and the concerned agencies to ensure that all entry points have units to check pollution levels, weight and age of vehicle across the city.

Last year, the NGT had banned petrol vehicles over 15 years old.

According to government statistics, around 28 lakh vehicles exist in Delhi which are more than 15 years old. The list based on registration data, however, does not include vehicles which may have been disposed off, sold or shifted out of Delhi.
