Experts’ Report on Number & Sequence of Odia Alphabets Released

ONI Bureau: The Expert Committee led by Prof Panchanan Mohanty, President of the Linguists’ Society, has released the report on number and sequence of Odia Alphabets, making it more user-friendly.

The report was released at the 4th Mother Language conclave, LangFest 2018 by The Intellects – a Progressive Forum for the Intellectuals in New Delhi on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

As the number and sequence of Odia Alphabets always remain confusing for both teachers and students, The Intellects tried to make things easier for all and submitted the recommendations to the Odisha Government.

The Expert Committee included leading Linguists Prof. Panchanan Mohanty, Dr. Debiprasanna Pattanayak, Dr. Satish Pradhan, Dr. Ramesh Mallick, Dr. Udayanath Sahu and Dr. Ajit Nayak.

As per the recommendations made in the report, 48 alphabets in Odia language have been finalised. They include 11 vowels and 37 consonants. While few alphabets have been dropped due to they don’t have any usability now, two new alphabets have been included in the list.

The Intellects has forwarded the report to Bhasha, Literature and Culture department as well as to Odia Bhasha Pratisthan for consideration. It was informed by Convener of The Intellects, Debendra Nath Rout.
